    Kumba Iron Ore was formed in November 2006 when the iron ore assets of Kumba Resources Limited were unbundled and listed separately on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE). It is a fully empowered company in terms of the 2014 equity ownership requirements set out in the South African Mining Charter. Shareholders include Anglo American (65.3%), the Industrial Development Corporation (12.91%), and minorities (21.79%).

    Historic highlights are:

    • 1932: Iscor’s first mine, Thabazimbi mine, was established in the Limpopo Province and supplies iron ore to the Pretoria Works steel plant.
       
    • 1954: Sishen mine was established in the Northern Cape Province.
       
    • 1976: South African Government invested in infrastructure to enable export of iron ore from  Sishen mine via the Sishen-Saldanha rail link and port facility.
       
    • 1989: Iscor was privatised.
       
    • 2001: Unbundled into two separately listed mining and steel companies, namely Kumba Resources and Iscor.
       
    • 2006: Unbundling of Kumba Resources' iron ore assets and the relisting of Exxaro and Kumba Iron Ore.
